Craigslist Adventures, 2014 Edition

I have a feeling this isn’t the first, nor will it be the last time I mention Craigslist, but once again we have purchased furniture using said site.

Perhaps I should back up. So in giving a tour of our house to some friends, it was mentioned that we were hoping to recruit a babysitter. It was quickly pointed out by a veteran babysitter that our house lacked a TV, and that perhaps we would never see the same babysitter twice given that setup.

With that in mind… well did you ever hear that story about the mouse and the cookie?

No mice this time but…

We need a baby sitter.

To keep the baby sitter happy, we (I am told) need a TV.

To have a TV, we (I am told) need an armoire.

To get the armoire home, we need a truck.

Only the “truck” we borrowed it’s actually one of the largest SUVs in production, so try this again…

To get the armoire home we need a U-Haul

To get the armoire onto the truck, we need three extra guys. (no kidding, I was starting to doubt the four of us were going to get it loaded at one point)

To get the armoire out of the tuck we needed a ramp

And now, to get it out of our garage we may need to have a BBQ or something just to get enough bodies on site to make the transition to the garage.

On the less complicated side of things, even with the truck rental, it was a great deal on a *very* solid piece. Hopefully that means it’s quality because I do not look forward to moving that beast again once it’s in place.

Oh, and did I tell you about this party we are having? Yeah we thought we would grill and then

<cough>carryThatGiantThingInTheGarageDownstairs</cough>,

ahem excuse me. Yeah grill and then I don’t know have some ice cream? I think I know where that ice cream maker got unpacked. It’s just down in the basement… you don’t mind carrying something while we go look do you? πŸ™‚

Anticipation

What did we do this week?

Well… not everything we wanted to.

Heather has gotten back into Craigslist with a vengeance, and I would like to say she has gotten great deals on everything she liked, but it has been more negotiations that fall through than transactions so far. On the bright side, at least from my prospective, at least half the attempted transactions are us selling things instead of purchases.

I finally got around to signing up for a shooting competition that was scheduled to take place over the weekend. Unfortunately there was a major thunderstorm blowing in that morning and they called the event off on account of lightning risk. Maybe next month I guess.

So, the short version is we haven’t done a whole lot yet, but boy do we have plans. πŸ™‚

Looking For Housing In Des Moines

So, the big news that sets up the post for today is that I have a job in Des Moines.Β  It will cut a few *hundred* miles out of the daily drive Heather and I were doing. The only catch is we have to find a place to move into before our drive actually improves.

To that end I spent yesterday looking into options in Des Moines. There are a lot of potential places we could live. After having my “we don’t have that much stuff” illusions shattered during the move to Atlantic, we definitely want toΒ  find options that have plenty of room.

People often assume we will be buying a house and, while that option would certainly provide a lot of room, we aren’t going to do that right now. We hope to move into a house at some point, but right now we don’t even know how long we will be in Des Moines.Β  I realized that I am on track to move once a year, every year, from the day I left college.Β  That is kind of a sad fact.

Given the fact we don’t think buying house is an option right now, but apartments seem kind of small, we started looking into other rental options. There aren’t a lot of rental houses in the area we wanted to live (West Des Moines). There were a few duplexes that looked interesting. I should mention that Craigslist seems to be a pretty solid resource for finding houses and duplexes that aren’t listed in the apartment finder books.

What we found was that staying inside our price/location goals didn’t leave that many options beyond apartments even then. I took some time to visit the few we thought might work. I hate to be so down on the people doing the actual showing, but when your basically going to be doing business with an individual instead of a housing company… That first impression matters a lot to me. I went away from everything I looked at thinking “this place isn’t quite what we are looking for, and I don’t know about that guy as a landlord”

As our last option, the plan is to get an apartment and save like crazy towards a house down the road. I looked at a few apartments, and they were, well apartments. As a tangent to that, my last visit of the day (after five so Heather could come too) was to look at a condo an owner wanted to rent out.

The place was amazing! Really nicely done, two bedroom two bathroom unit. It basically had everything we were looking for, and the price was way cheaper than we expected to be paying for anything that big. We did not however decide to go with this option. Maybe you are wondering why. I am going to explain this in the form of a bulleted list addressed to the seller, who no doubt has the same question.

Why Heather and Jordan chose not to rent your condo:

  • Craigslist posting lacked essential things such as the location of the listing, and properly spelled words
  • Seller sounded disoriented on phone, gave rambling answers that lacked any content.
  • Touring a unit where the power has been turned off, while at dusk does not improve the presentation.
  • Seller said “I don’t want to live here!”, then declined to answer the follow up “why?”
  • Seller gave the impression he was going to be forced to move soon.

I don’t quite know how to put into words the general strangeness of the whole thing, but suffice to say we are still looking.

The Projector Is Sold

My first brush with Craigslist has concluded with success.

I think things could have gone a lot better but I did sell my projector, and it has been picked up before I had to move it. The downside is I under-estimated peoples interest in the projector, and was impatient in selling it. If I had been willing to take two weeks to sell it, and started the price about 25% higher, I think I could have sold it for quite a bit higher than I ended up making the sale for.

All the same any cash is a lot more useful to me than having electronics decaying in a closet somewhere. A 780p image stretched over a 110″ diagonal screen looks pretty good, but it will be obsolete by the time I live in a place I could set it up again. I would love to see organic displays come into their own, or something along those lines. Whatever happens I will be content to sit on the sidelines for a year or two and see what becomes the next cutting-edge.

Also my new monitor has an HDMI input port, so if I really really need to see something in HD I can use that πŸ™‚
